  • New York Zen Community is a Sangha dedicated to Shikantaza Zazen and Dōgen study. We offer lectures exploring the teachings of Dōgen Zenji and other Buddhist texts, with a focus on their practical relevance and integration into daily life.

  • Part of a global network of disciples and students of Okumura Shōhaku Rōshi of the Sōtō Zen School of Japan, we are under the direct lineage of Sawaki Kōdō, Uchiyama Kōshō and Okumura Shōhaku.

  • An expanding collection of resources is being curated to support independent Buddhist study.

Upcoming Events and Special Announcements

Morning Zazen on zoom continues throughout the month:  Monday – Friday from 7:00 am – 8:00 am followed by short readings from Dōgen’s Shōbōgenzō Zuimonki and an abbreviated Morning Service (ryaku chōka) on days ending in 4 and 9.

Treat yourself to a day of Shikantaza zazen! Sit with us all day or for any portion. All are invited to join in Open Sōsan at the end.

Flower Adornment Sutra
 All-Day Study Intensive

As we dive more deeply into this joyful and instructive sutra, we discover the wisdom and guidance it can provide us now.

Lotus Sutra: Kannon-gyō
Examining the verse portion of this sutra, we focus on the nature of Kanzeon's power and how it is able to liberate us from suffering and distress.
