  • New York Zen Community is a Sangha dedicated to Shikantaza Zazen and Dōgen study. We offer lectures exploring the teachings of Dōgen Zenji and other Buddhist texts, with a focus on their practical relevance and integration into daily life.

  • Part of a global network of disciples and students of Okumura Shōhaku Rōshi of the Sōtō Zen School of Japan, we are under the direct lineage of Sawaki Kōdō, Uchiyama Kōshō and Okumura Shōhaku.

  • An expanding collection of resources is being curated to support independent Buddhist study.

Upcoming Events and Special Announcements

Morning Zazen on zoom continues throughout the month:  Monday – Friday from 7:00 am – 8:00 am followed by short readings from Dōgen’s Shōbōgenzō Zuimonki and an abbreviated Morning Service (ryaku chōka) on days ending in 4 and 9.
April 15
Summer Ango begins 

 From April 15 - July 15 we will follow the ancient tradition of intensified practice and study.

April 22
Lotus Suūtra:
Kannon-gyō

A deep look at the verse portion of Kannon-gyō (Fumonbon-ge) and the ways verse delivers the same message as prose in a way that hits us very differently.

April 24
Monthly Sewing Circle
We will be meeting at Issan's from 4 pm - 8 pm to complete robes for upcoming events.

We will do the same next week, May 1st.

Ask about real life situations and concerns together in real time or email questions in advance to Rev. Issan Koyama.
May 2
Monthly Zazenkai 
Treat yourself to a day of Shikantaza zazen! Sit with us all day or for any portion. All are invited to join in Open Sōsan at the end.
